how could Live automatically sort your samples for you??? Make folder, organize you clips and sounds just the way you want them on your hard drive, and live will see the folders and organization that you put into it. Live can't do everything for you....

right!
it won't work automatic, i know!
look at garage band the folder system is really really good.
take a look and tell me that it's not good, will you?
but if you have a bunch of folders like you use with reason,
the folder window is not toooooo practical, is it?
too small and i don't want so see the subfolders.
if you have a lot. it's *bbrrrr*

I'm on pc, so I can't comment on GB. All I can say is that I find live's browser to be very handy, esp. since you can preview samples with headphones, and since other DAW apps don't even really have a browser to speak of. Live's interface is probably the least likely aspect of their program to change much--it is the bomb. All i can say is that surely you know you can drag the side of the browser to change its width. Beyond that, I guess your best bet is to try and reorganize your files to avoid sub-folders and basically tailor you clip storage scheme to fit Lives' browsers organization.
