can I get away with a SB Live soundcard?

Hi. I just built a new DAW and I am planning to turn my old P4 1.8 Gig rig into a live Live machine. Will I be able to use a SoundBlaster Live card with 5.1 outs? I would like to start with this until I can afford to get a decent sound card for the rig, but I just spent all my budget on the new DAW. If the SB is simply a no-go, how about some suggestions for a relatively cheap soundcard (with multiple outs...I know, I'm asking for the impossible, but humour me), that will squeak by for now. Thanks.

I really don't know anything about sound blasters, but if it works work it, atleast till you can afford something better.
I have an Maudio quattro usb sound card that has multiple ins and outs. It's cool, it ran me around three hundred, 275, something like that about a year and a half ago. You can get them new from
musiciansfriend
now for $150.00 now which, in my opinion, is a pretty good deal. With the exception of some recent problems with the latest drivers for os10.3.3 I have been pretty happy with mine.

If you have the SB0220, its not worth trying, It has a bug that stops it working properly, but most other duplex soundblasters are ok for your purpose, the trouble with soundblaster is that they re-sample from 44k to 48k, causing minor latency and generating "artifacts" that detract from sound quality.
The advantage that they do have is cost.
