Trying to control Drum Rack with padKontrol

Live 7 is looking great so far (specially the hardware freeze...fantastic!!) but the Drum Rack in not working like it is said to . I have a padKontrol set up in my Preferences as a control surface. According to what Ableton has said it is supposed to trigger whatever notes are within the Drum Rack "square". However, it is controlling the same 16 notes no mater what I select with the Drum Rack square. Any ideas on how to fix this? I would really like to use the option that has been "sold" to me.

Thanks for the help.

I just logged on to ask the same question, only I'm using the Microkontrol, which in theory should work the same way.

Theres a video on the Ableton website showing drummracks being used this way (i.e., the 16 pads always control the 16 selected pads on the screen.)

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Hey wolvicorn,

I am not sure why what I did worked, but hopefully it can at least offer you a clue.

As described in my previous message my padKontrol was not working properly with Drum Rack. My initial thinking was that I needed to load the preset for Ableton Live that came with the padKontrol, but that did not work.

By accident I realized that when I selected a different Scene on my padKontrol it started working properly. My theory is that all of the Scenes on the padKontrol were set to the factory default with exception to the Scene I had Live's Scene Preset in. Once I copied the Scene that I knew worked to my Scene 1 slot, it began to work properly.

I hope I wrote this in a way that you can understand that it at least offers you a clue in the right direction.

Good luck!

it is a pad control set issue. for me, i think the pad kontrol works with the chromatic setting. perss-hold 'set' + pad "11."

now everybody smoke.

Yes, I'm having the same issues. I'll try some of the stuff mentioned here but I don't think it'll work. I'm dissappointed that the Abe's advertised this following on the fly mapping but no documentation to support the function (at least that I have found). I mentioned this in another thread and Somebody in the NYC office said that a tutorial will be out shortly. This is (IMO) the best feature of the upgrade but I can't use it yet. aaaaagggghhhh!

Scene 11 worked for the basic set of pads but the scrolling rectangle doesn't update the padKontrol or mapping per the video released on Drum Racks. The logic of it all doesn't make sense. I have a chromatic group programed on scene 2 but it seems to triger random notes on the drum pad. Please we need more documentation on this!

I ended up creating my own script for the pK, but the included one does work. Here’s the layout, all pads on channel 10. This may actually be a scene that already exists in the preloaded data, I didn’t try that.

Pad 1 – C#4
Pad 2 – A4
Pad 3 – F4
Pad 4 – D#4
Pad 5 – C4
Pad 6 – B3
Pad 7 – A3
Pad 8 – G3
Pad 9 – C#3
Pad 10 – D#3
Pad 11 – G#4
Pad 12 – G#3
Pad 13 – C3
Pad 14 – E3
Pad 15 – F#3
Pad 16 – A#3

It works with Korg's factory preset scene 1, so if you've made any changes (such as remapping for an octave up to get it to work with 6.10's impulse), you'll have to restore the factory preset.

Hi folks,

Sorry you're having issues setting up your pad controller to work with Drum Racks.

There is a brief discussion about how to set this up in the "Pad View" section of the Racks chapter in the manual.

Are you sure that your padKONTROL is selected in the Control Surface chooser in the MIDI/Sync Preferences, and that the track containing your Drum Rack is record enabled?

I need to check on this, but the pad controller auto-updating may only work if the controller is using the default preset. Try pressing the Dump button next to the padKONTROL chooser and see if this helps.

Best,

Dennis D: I am using the default on scene 11 as I've got other stuff programed on scenes 1 and 2. (see previous post recommendation). This works for the basic 16 pads. I can't seem to get auto-updating to work. so as I scroll through the pads using the scroller in the "pad view" the rack still fires the same pads with the padKontrol, not the updated view.

BTW - the "dump" button is not enabled for padKontrol. It does work on my axiom 49. Also the sparse documentation on pad view does little to explain setups and auto-updating etc. it is a very brief set of info.

this has got it working for me.. but strangely only certain notes respond to Roll, most don't... is there an additional midi setup i need to make all notes use roll? -

ok forget it i realised i could sort this with the korg editor..

I have the same problem.....
I notice that if I set pad 01 (on padkontrol) to C3, drum rack plays C2...if I set it to E4 drum rack plays E3 and so on. It seems to play always an octave down

Aber:

The Korg padKontrol is one octave off from Ableton's midi implimentation. That was the same in Live 6, etc.

I've got mine going and its brilliant!

I had to reset to factory settings, that sets Scene 1 to the mappings that Meta posted up, then in settings I had to set The PadControl as a control surface, set the input to Port A and the output to CTRL 1 and then at the Drum Rack I locked it to the padKontrol. Now the pad controls where ever the grid box is scrolled to, it's such an awesome new feature. :)
