What's life like there?

the economy is really bad...

I lived about 25 miles north until i was 22... my dad and sister still live in the area..

great music.. but a lot of hard times.. unless you have the right gig


there are some cool little towns right outside of the city..n

but man detroit is dead check out this website..

I lived in the outskirts for a short time, a buddy now owns a place in the thick of it. It really isn't that bad, but I know it took him a little time and a solid group of friends to find the cool places to go. I just visited him and we were able to do all the normal things without much hassle.

The economy is pretty tough there, though. I think it was just named "the most dangerous city". It has gotten that before. My sister and brother-in-law live there as well. They are doing ok, even though he works for Ford.

I'm fascinated with the setting - the post-industrial, urban decay. I read the white population is down to less than 10%?

I once drove thru Detroit. It seemed like a scene out of Bladerunner.

the picture on that site shows an old shity building being blown up.. but it was to make way for a new shiny building.. one that has a hard rock borders and some other crap..
i think downtown detroit it actually turning around.
if you drove through there in the 90s all you would see is borded up buildings and bums. but now there is actually shit to do.

I'm from Detroit. Moved to Chicago about 2 years ago.

It's beautiful, bleak, artistic, poor, lawless ghostown completely cut off from the rest of the world. Sometimes I miss it.

I live about 60 miles east and north of Detroit. About 15 years ago I lived much closer to it in an industrial suburb. Detroit is really trying to turn itself into a world class city, but the local government there is back assward. They are trying to change the facade without changing the inner workings. They did a nice job of hosting the Superbowl and the All-star game, but they only put a shine on the city without first scraping away the crap. So nothing stuck. I in know way am saying that the people of Detroit are the crap, the people of Detroit are good people, hardy and strong willed. The crap is the regulations and restrictions on business in the city and the state. We are essentially a socialist state, we are dependent on the auto industry, and held to that by the unions.
So, unfortunately, until the government here gets the shit out and frees our creativity to change Detroit, it will remain an empty shell. Its 15% unemployment rate speaks volumes to the failure of this cities' government and the states' utter failure to help what should be the the premier city in Michigan.

I don't know about 10%. Detroit's a big college town as well (Wayne state).

you should check out that entire site... really it is nothing but love for detroit...

...it was the early 90's when the d was my stomping ground. I still make it out there every year or 2...

i'm not sure what i think about the new ball park and casinos

its defiantly a whole new place...

besides the point, it's a tuff town to move into and grab a good job


of course you will have absolutely no trouble finding great music

1 million live in the city (down from 2 million at its peak) and 5+ million in the surrounding suburbs, so it depends how you look at it ..


really detroit it the first american city to die and begin to grow again.. it is a fascinating place I feel privileged to have spent a part of my life there.



oh yeah and the techno is hot!

I should amend my post and point out that the cultural scene there is pretty good. The Detroit Symphony is a world class symphony and the theater district is small, but good. Of course being the founding place of techno doesn't hurt.
