This is (and always has been) really annoying!

I have a 4 bar midi clip on a track in the Arrangement. Loop is on and Overdub is enabled. I want Live to keep looping the 4 bars so I can continue to overdub and experiment. However, when I stop recording, wherever I stop, Live splits my 4 bar clip into two clips. I have to select the two clips, right click, then consolidate to make it a 4 bar clip again. It gets old after a while!

No, it still chops the original clip into two clips. Bummer.

one workaround is to allow live to complete an extra cycle of the loop while you don't record anything new into it. then as it begins the next cycle, stop recording and hit undo. you'll still get a split at the loop start and end points, but at least that's tidier than a split half-way through the loop.

another workaround is to activate punch out before you start recording. then once you're done recording, rather than deactivate the record button, just deactivate the loop switch and allow live to play out until past the punch out point.

alternatively do all your recording in session view, assuming you don't need to record automation!
