External harddrive problems with Live 6 ad 7

I'm having lots of problems with my external harddrive - LaCie 2G 7200 rpm which contains 30,000 mp3's. (I tried USB and firewire)
Live 6 (I am a newbie and installed Live 6 last week) did get stuck all the time when I tried to use mp3's from that drive - it goes in non respond mode. Than yesterday I installed the Live 7 demo and that went even worse, while installing you could see the harddrive causes problem.
This morning I checked it with BPM - a program I use when I am wedding DJing - no problems at all - it scanned the whole drive without any problems
so now I do not know what to do - I searched the manual and the forums but did not find a solution
