Renote SL Crackle caused by 'sync' setting -in my experience

i have a single scene running a single sample in a single track in ableton.
there are no plugins, vst's or vsti's running.
I have the remote SL set up with the latest drivers (released in the last few days)
I have followed the instructions to the letter on how to set it up.
It crackles. about every third bar - but never in the same place.
If I turn off the suggested 'sync' setting on port 2 output, the crackle disappears.
as I'm not sure what the sync does, thats good enough a work round for me. why it happens who knows ?
anyone know how to turn off the flashing tempo button. old intructions (set midi clk to midi-in) doesn't work anymore ?
