midi learn?

in various aplications that i have , this option appear, midi learn, can u tell me what is this?
this help you to assign certain functions in your software to knobs, faders,... on your midi controllers.
if midi learn is enabled you can choose a function in your software by selecting it and move the control you'd like to assign this to.
midi learn will then recognze which contro you moved and.... there u go.
