Rack knob assignments

Is there a way to midi assign knobs on instruments/effects so that they only pick up midi when I record enable the track?
Say for example I have midi cc 23 assigned to 4 parameters, with each parameter in a different VST instrument track. Turning physical knob that sends cc 23 changes the values on all 4 tracks. Is there a way to say which track receives the midi? Or do I have to use different midi channels and change what channel the cc is sent on from my controller for this to work?

This depends a bit on your work methods. I finally managed to set up my
BCR as a remote controller, and this has really made life easier. If you're on
a PC, go to the application data folder under documents & settings > (user
name), and find the Ableton folder. Under 'Live', you'll find a folder called
'user remote scripts', which contains two .txt documents which explain how
to set up a controller. On the Mac, these will be under the equivalent folder.
This way, you are controlling only the device which you have selected (it gets
a blue hand symbol when you click on it). Basically, you reserve eight midi
CCs for this use, which gives you control over e.g. the eight macro controls of a rack.
If you have a lot of controls on your controller , like I have on the BCR, you
still have plenty of stuff free for mapping to other parameters.

That is great info, sporkles.
I'm going to try to make a customized map for my Remote 25.
...unless someone has allready done so and care to share?

Isn't that exactly what the automap does for you?

Hmm, nope.
I have the Remote 25, the first model, not SL. No automap.

If you have the Novation SL and a computer with internet you can download the automap from the novation site and upload it to the controller.
