Ok, i dont need anything expensive. i'm looking for something cheap (under 300).

this will mainly be used for riff writing with my guitar/bass. i'm currently looking at TonePort from Line 6 and Kontakt 1 from Native Instruments.

any other suggestions/thoughts on my choices?

See, you might escape all the sarky replies by... I dunno... answering the question. We do really like helping out around here, but it generally takes a bit of info to set us in the right (gif-less) direction :)

we're getting closer... how many ins/outs do you need? are you limited to firewire or USB? is this for a laptop, IOW PCI is out of the question.

found this one in about 20 seconds.
http://www.zzounds.com/item--PRSFIREBOX <-- Presnous Firebox for just over $300 with tax.
avoid M Audio if you can, they can be problematic.

until then, we gif.

running it off my macbook pro. mainly for guitar, bass, and maybe even a mic once in a while.

so i dont need anything that crazy. i cant stand a lot of latency so thats my main priority there.

i'll be using live of course, logic 8, and guitar rig.

that presonus would be a good deal. definitely look for that style of box, one with those connectors on the front. they can support a mic or a guitar/bass, two at once, which is great. it has 2 mono inputs which could be for a mixer that you connect your synths and whatnots to, bus them down. the 2 firewires are for daisychaining.

latency is a matter of getting a good card, high sample rates and a nice dose of RAM so you can use a high sample rate. you want under 10mS. to me playing at 10mS is doable but it's like walking through thick mud. to compensate for that I set the monitor mix to half, so I hear what's going in and what's coming out.
