Installation size of session drums, external hard drive?

Quick question for those using ableton suite.
Does session drums need to be installed on the boot partition of your hard drive? It's a pretty big installation and I'm pretty short on space on the laptop hard drive.
I'm using the laptop hard drive to record to but I want to know if I can have session drums and EIC2 on an external USB2 hard drive.
