I've purchased live 1 and live 3

and now, I don't get a free update to live 4. I have to pay another 119 bucks. That's bullshit. Why isn'tn this a free update for ppl who have been supporting you from the beginning? Is there some radical new design that cost the company millions of dollars?

and they didn't even add VSTi support.

Even if one got live 3..still got to pay $50 US for upgrade..thats not fair..many softwares lets you upgrade for free like reason, Native instruments etc..felt cheated.

you paid for the features that you got in live 1 and 3. you did not pay for infinite features. you don't have to pay anything if you don't want to, but if you want more features than you originally paid for, then that costs more money. just because ableton introduces more features, dosn't make previous versions less powerfull. they've just as many features as they did last week.

if you purchase a car in 1970, before power windows were available, would you expect free power window installation several years down the line when they became available?

quit whinning about paying for upgrades. if you don't like it, go write an open source replacement for live and see how much you like working for free.

Yes there is vsti support and no you're not entitled to a free upgrade. $120 is is a pretty good deal considering all of the added features. Sure, it would be nice if the upgrade were cheaper but at less than 1/3 the list price how can you complain?

If Live 4 simply consisted of bug fixes and useless new "features" thought of by the marketing department (the way many larger software companies seem to operate) then you would have a point. But Ableton doesn't work that way which is why they're a cool company and why I'll gladly give them $120 for Live 4.

Personally, I'm more than happy to pay $119 (or actually $49 since I think I bought it within that time period) for the added midi features. Right now I'm using Plogue rewired to it and it's sort of a pain. I liked the comparison to the power windows. Nice way to put it.

If you combine live 1 and live 3 voltron style then you'll get live 4...

An overlooked point is that most free upgrades are just incremental updates, designed to fix issues arising since the software was originally released. Virtually all major updates (eg Win95 > Win98, Rebirth 1 > Rebirth 2 etc etc) aren't free but are often discounted for existing owners.

Ableton's upgrade prices seem very reasonable indeed when compared to the competition. And considering there is virtually no competition for Live on the Mac platform, the upgrade price looks superb.

word. People need to realize a LOT changed between 1 and 2, 2 and 3, and now 3 to 4. "free upgrades" from other software manufacturer's just means free bug fixes as bugs continue to be found. while other companies may keep busy fixing bugs for years on end and providing numerous "updates", Live actually does public beta testing legitimately--i.e. its free, instead of selling you the new product version .1, then waiting for the load of bugs to be emailed in so they can get on to the "free updates" (read bugfixes). By the time they fully realesed 3, it only took a month or so to arrive at the 3.0.2 or 3.0.4 that we all love and is basically flawless. What else are they to do but to keep at it and come up with 4--3 is done. If you don't want 4's features, feel free to keep whatever version you have. I would gladly pay what they are asking and more for all of the new features 4 brings, and don't expect Ableton to give me all of their hard work since 3 for free--that is totally absurd. It about as lame as saying, hey I bought Britney Spears' first album, so I should get the new one for free.

If Live 4 lives up to its pre-release hype, I think it will be well worth the bones to upgrade.
