Macbook Air

Post by grizzler » Tue Jan 15, 2008 6:31 pm

So no new macbook pro! Just a new Macbook to add to the range.

From what i am reading it had 1.6ghz standard upgraded to 1.8ghz.

No optical drive but ability to share one over wireless

Some funky stuff with a trackpad to make it like the iphone

13.3 inch display. Led backlit keyboard and about 3 pounds.

Oh and 80gb drive or 64gb solid state drive.

So yeh it wont replace my macbook pro, but depending on the price. Might be nice to run about with. Use for typing and yeh thats about it ! :D :D

What you think?

See the topic above regarding the MacExpo.

$1799.

I'm not running around with that.

What kind of hard drive is it? I don't see any room for a fan.

Remember the rumors talked about flash memory...

Could it be a lot quieter than the rest of the macbook line?

It's REALLY smal, light and sexy. However, a big turnoff for me is the lack of Firewire. What? How could they? Pretty much rules it out as an audio laptop...

its pretty, but that's about as far as it goes for me.

I'd rather buy myself a new MacBook Pro when my current one starts getting old

it's not the HD that needs a fan. my amiga has a hd in an enclosed space (and ahs had one since it left the factory 17 years ago) and no fan and it's fine...

So, well, when will apple release a 13" MacBook Pro, with 1680x1050 (or at least 1440x900) resolution, firewire 800 and expresscard? I want it! =)

Still, he has a point. Even if hard drives live significantly longer if properly cooled, most hard drives don't have or really need a fan. The biggest cooling problem in a modern computer is the processor.

120 mb.

I also have a 20mb drive somewhere. and it IS worth comparing, because that drive is a 44 pin 2.5" IDE drive which is technically exactly like the one in the iBook I'm writing this on. It would even fit in it. So nerr.

The Macbook Air is not suitable for a mobile audio workstation.

- Slower Processor
- Crawling HDD (4200rpm ipod sized 1.8" one) unless you pay 1 grand to upgrade to solid state
- Standard/Maximum 2GB ram
- No firewire
- No expresscard
- Ultra expensive to get it up to decent specs ($3k)

This is suited for rich college kids, the traveling screenwriter, the traveling businessman, or someone who just wants the pure steeze of having the lightest, thinnest, most jizz-worthy laptop to look at on the block.
