Midi controller on Impulse problem

I have an Ion (IDE4) midi drum pad.
Does anyone know how I can use it to PLAY the live kits, not set off drum loops or samples.
I know the keys are mapped for C3 and ASD,etc but I can not get to use my pads to actually play live drums and sounds
Please help!!!
