some ex colleagues of mine spent some time with jet li during the filming for the movie 'Hero'. apparantly the dude just sits there with some beads doing this throat singing

a guy who I was in a band with used to do throat-singing all the time, he wasn't as good as this fella of course. Good enough to wow the ladies though. Only Mongolian ladies though, strangely

sad thing is there is a 'voice life expectency' for those guys of something like 35 years old - it completely destroys their vocal chords

is that right? it seems unlikely somehow, although perhaps possible with that low voiced style (kargyraa).
The mid voice style is quite easy to do for a single note at least, you sort of sing a raspy "uuuhhh" and shape your mouth to focus in on the overtones. I can do it in a real unstable sort of way. I can manage one note and then fail to find another. I can;t imagine that the mid-voiced style is too damaging.
