Hi forum people,

I just got an Bass synth - a FB838 with MIDI IN - I connected it to my audio interface - Alesis io|2 - (I am using a MacBook with Live 6)

The connections are correct, like midi out to midi in - and the audio interface is receiving midi data from live as well, but it is still not working.
What am I doing wrong, where is the mistake?

(The weird thing is, that I can test the FB838 when I am connecting it directly to my keyboard.)

Any suggestions?

Hello,

Make sure that the "track" for the MIDI output port in the Live MIDI preferences is activated.
Then choose this output port in a MIDI track output type chooser. Make sure that the FB338 receives MIDI on the corresponding channel number.

The MIDI out of the Alesis io|2 should go into the FB338 MIDI in - also make sure that the audio outs of the FB338 are connected.

Unfortunately, I did not get it working.

Live is getting the midi-input from my keyboard. (It's successfully included into my setup and I am able to use it with VST plugins for quite a while...) So, I am receiving the midi-notes in a midi-track. The input selector is set to my keyboard. At the same track I am selecting my audio interface (io|2) as the output.
As the FB383 should receives midi at port 16, I am setting the output channel in live to 16 too.
A small light at my io|2 is actually telling me, that it receives midi-data. It blinks simultaneous to my keyboard-playing.

its still not working though. am i doing something completely wrong or should I consider one of my components as damaged or broken???

have you set up the i/o so that the midi channel receives from your keyboard and sends it to the midi to the synth?

have you armed the midi track that you'e using to forward note messages to your synth?

are you sending midi data to the synth on the correct channel?

from what you have said so far i can't rule out hardware failure unless you are sure that the midi out on the alesis is working

for what its worth, if I were in that situation I would focus my efforts on the FB383. The rest sounds like its working fine (as midi light is flashing)
try adjusting all settings on FB383, and make sure to turn it on and off a couple of times. try and get hold of another keyboard with midi-in, so you can double check the midi out on the soundcard, but I suspect you'll eventually track the problem down to the FB383. Just a hunch !!! not much help huh

Okay,

I figured out following:
When the keyboard is connected DIRECTLY to the FB383 its working perfectly.

But as long as I am playing the keyboard into LIVE and the MIDI data should go through the audio interface to the FB383 - its not working.
But: LIVE shows me that MIDI data is going through and my audio interface says, its sending the midi! - so, my FB383 is just not "understanding" the midi from the interface....

its hard to give you any constructive feedback without a bit more information ?
what is the 'computer keyboard' you're talking about ? how is it connected ? how do you connect if directly to the FB383 ?

okay. here is my setuo. i want to get it work like sketch "1"- Sketch "2" was a test-setup. As the test was successful, I know that my FB838 is actually working. It's just not playing the midi it receives from the Alesis io|2 ---

First - has the FB383 got a headphone out ? if so try and trigger it (using setup 1) just to check it isn't something simple like audio confirguration (which I'm sure it isn't)

If the 'keyboard' is capable of creating sounds itself (i.e. if it has an audio out) try this :
The keyboard has a midi out and midi in. you could try connecting the midi out of the alesis to the midi in of the keyboard (forget about the fb383) and then create a midi part in ableton using the pencil tool to see if you can get any response. Use the headphone output of the keyboard to see if you can hear anything.

Another thing : have you tried every single midi channel one by one ? the FB383 could be set to midi channel 4 (for example) and ableton could be transmitting on channel 1 (for example) this would give you flashing midi lights on the Alesis but no response from the FB383 (when you connect the keyboard to the FB383 it may be transmitting midi in 'omni' mode - which unfortunately Ableton is not capable of)

hope something there makes sense / helps to isolate where the problem is.

Failing all of this could you post up two screen shots :
1. showing the in/out settings on the midi track you have set up in Ableton. It could be a setting there.
2. showing the midi in/out preferences

it cant be the audio configuration, as i am getting the sound with setuo2 (and the audio configs in 1 and 2 are the same)

Unfortunately, the Keyboard is just am USB Keyboard. It has an USB port and one additional MIDI OUT. - No midi in.... =(
