Hi, I've been DJ'ing with my friend's iBook for a number of months via my desktop PC and an e-mu 0404 pci interface. However, as you can imagine it's pretty hefty to lug the huge PC around everywhere so I've upgraded to a MacBook in the hope to make things easier but it's just brought some problems so far.

Basically, I'm looking for an audio interface that will allow both the laptops to hook up (allow listening of each other before output), allow pre-listening for both and also route both to the same output. The cheaper the better as we are both students!

Alternatively other suggestions are welcome and is it worth buying a hi-def audio converter instead of the supplied CoreAudio from Apple?

Audio interfaces can only digitally hook up to one computer at a time.

The cheapest solution for you and your buddy would be this:

One of you can hook into it through USB, and the other can plug their headphone output into the RCA inputs on the BCD-2000.

Agreed.....except you need to change that "2000" to the "3000" model.

Sounds pretty awesome! And it's all ok on Live (both working with Live 6)? Sounds like it does everything we need it to do though and looks great which is a nice bonus thanks for the 3000 tip too apparently the 2000 had some mac problems - now to ebay!

Update: Looking at a review it recommends the M-Audio Conectiv as an alternative and reading about it seems to fit my needs a little bit better than the BCD3000. Anyone with user experience of the Conectiv?

Also delving deeper I'm now seriously considering the Numark DM950, a bit noobish but would get the job done. Problem is going to uni in the next year so it won't get as much use as it would do otherwise.
