Using doepfer modules to process external audio.

Hello all,
I wonder if anybody has any experience using a doepfer module to process external audio without the A-119 Ext. In module.
As I'm putting together an incredibly small modular system, I would love to reserve the rack space for something more sexy than the A-119.
Should it matter if I use an external preamplifier? Other than I'll obviously be missing out on the env. follower and the gate triggered by the comparator.
