I don't get people who are shocked that there's porn bots on the forum. is it even possible to get onto the web without being hit with porn?
No

Yeah, the funny thing is: Turning off the display of the post count is just a checkbox in the options section of this forum.

Personally I believe Ableton should turn it off until Forge hits 30k. Then flick it back on to give him a heart attack.

^ that's funny. but I think it'd hit myself and nebulae pretty hard too. "I did what?!?!?!" post count is almost always nothing more than a reason to shit on someone, "get a life" (I've got a great one, thank you.)

Definitely not!

But it's free, comes recommended from a human (not a bot) and with a little bit for every taste...

Turn off the post count - that's a novel idea actually

people see post counts and assume so much

say my post count was off

then I post some neat little trick you can do with compression and a filter

people would be like 'wow' great tip - not realizing my 4 thousands other post were about Ms. Hilton and Cartman (doh!)

or the exact opposite - someone makes some off comment regarding their nemisis and it's like 'wow' that guy needs help

not realizing his 5 thousand other posts were very helpful and insightful

do it do it do it

the great forum experiment lives on

The self moderation (so to speak) is wonderful here. We really only care about the top page, right? Maybe the second? I've seen it a few times where everyone just lets crap posts sink down off the top pages in quick order. Kinda like a passive aggressive team effort 8)

I am honestly amazed on how well this forum self performs. Really, it's wonderful.

Or is it more like this;

Yeah. At one point I did think to myself that I wasted too much of my life on this forum. On the other hand, currently I'm sitting in a studio surrounded by more gear then I wished for. In another country, with my own place to boot.
So in my unique scenario, "wasting" a lot of hours on this forum actually changed the course of my life.

Post count is nothing more then a bulls eye on us. You're either a "n00b" or an "elitist". I've never heard anybody say what the perfect post count is to make you a normal person.

My $0.02:

The Pron could make this site non-worksafe. That would not be cool. Personally, I work wierd hours here in Afghanistan, and I don't work on a computer with access to the Internet... Though I still get time to get on the internet in the welfare internet stations. However, too many nasty keywords on any government computer (including our welfare internet stations) and the site is blocked.

So, from a purely self-interested perspective, a mod who had the power to delete threads that were blatant pron or spam would be helpful.

I wonder how many contributors here do so from their workplaces? I bet quite a few. Anyways, just mentioning it.

The caveat to this is that I wouldn't want to see anybody deleting political or OT threads, nor deleting of editing their opponents' posts rather than allowing spirited debate.

That's easy, 1438... give or take a few.

[edit: you can have an extra 1000 and still be normal if you changed your handle at some point.]

I'm on another phpbb forum - it recently changed to a newer format. It looks really good. I wonder if it also has more advanced security so that you can make automatic blocks against pronbots without needing a person to sit and do it. Only thing was it sometimes made safari crash, but that now seems to be fixed. That is a moderated forum, but I'm sure that it's not only human modding that prevents the pron from showing up.

The OP mentioning not being able to look at the forum at work... I see what you mean. However, in essence we all joined this place for quite different reasons than to be slugged with pron stuff. It should be pretty simple to make the place work in the way it's meant to without needing a 24/7 nanny telling people to stop swearing... we should be able to look at this site at work, with the kids, whatever time... surely it's pretty simple? And in the end, we're talking about a straight removal of pron and other unwelcome stuff, not thread-locking or deletion of users because someone doesn't like them. We've had that discussion lots of times and we can now block posts from people we don't want hear from - so no mod needed. Just someone to delete the bots.

I hear ya, the day I stop learning about Live, music and all things related from the forum is the day I stop checking it. a lot of my gear is influenced by the whores here.

I have never once clicked on a pron post 'accidentally', most often it's curiosity of what's going on. anyone who gets tricked by those posts should probably be taken out of the gene pool.

I've watched a few documentaries lately about kids and the internet, from bullying leading to suicides, to predators, to what kids are exposed to. they pretty much know what's up, at least to the extent that there's stuff they don't want to see. in the big picture this forum is just one site. is it at all feasible that some kid is going to have Live, and only ever visit this forum?

oh, and for posting at work, I'll sit here and post while my coworkers are chatting for hours in their cubicles about any damn thing. it's all about taking care of what you're paid for. anyone who thinks they know how everyone else leads their lives is really naive, it's a worldwide public forum, the world is bigger than you know.
