Recommended Specs for Live 7.01?

hey there, i'm using ableton live 7.01, but after a few tracks, getting unuseable crackle..
i'm using a focusrite saffire to record guitar and vocals.. its all fine at that stage, but when i'm playing back/arranging, with 2 guitar tracks playing, and 2-3 midi tracks playing, (drum, bass and extra guitar instruments) it just begins fuzzing and crackling and my cpu usage just goes nuts.. sometimes with a lot less, 2 or so midi tracks and it'll begin to crackle.. I've upped the latency on my saffire to it's maximum, and it still does it..
it's been a year or two since i was regularly using ableton 5/6 on this same computer, and back then i didn't even have an audio interface (ASIO4ALL, SoundMax audio), and i swear it was perfect by comparison.. my computer is not cutting edge, and the saffire is meant to be top-shelf.. is it live 7.01? or could the cpu be my bottleneck? P4 Northwood 2.4ghz, 512 PC3200 ram? i could definitely use more ram, but what gets the best out of live? what about throwing a new quad core at it?
