OSX Latency with core audio - what latency is normal?

Hi All,

I have just got a maxed out MacBook Pro (2.6Ghz, 4GB RAM, 200GB 7200 HDD - thanks to work!) but am finding lots of glitches in Ableton on projects that run fine on my 2Ghz MacBook. Apple said to try a system reinstall and then just install Ableton and see what happens - so this is what I am doing.

But I need a latency benchmark. So my question is - could some of you post the latency you get when using just the core audio drivers (no interface) with a new Live set and you do the latency test at 80% - so what is the lowest you can go and not have any glitches during the test for at least 2 minutes?

Please post

model:
CPU:
RAM:
HDD:
Latency (ms):

Thanks so much!!

There's a huge thread on performance testing similar to what you're after. I tried searching for you but couldn't find it. It's there though..

I get really good latency. Currently set to around 30 ms which is fine for me. 2.2 Ghz Intel core 2 duo Macbook Pro with 4GB RAM and an Edirol FA101 firewire interface.

I dont know what you mean by this?

"with a new Live set and you do the latency test at 80% - so what is the lowest you can go and not have any glitches during the test for at least 2 minutes?"

It cant be tested whithout exactly your live set or song and your plug-ins.

All users use different plug-ins and settings for Live.

If I just play one plug-in FM8, my latecy is as low as 6ms and it works for how long the song are.
