MIDI sync offset

Hi,
I'm using Live7 as a midi looper/sequencer for live rack synth control. I also have 4 samples loops playing at the same time and each of my 5 synths are feeded back into live for audio processing (delay reverb compression)
Everything works fine, very few crackles, in that situation Live shows its full potential of stabitlity and realiability.
My only problem is when I get a big HD access, for instance when I start a clip for the first time, Live sometimes stops for a sec then continue playing. I know my external hard drive is responsible for this problem, being very slow on file access. The main problem is after this little pause, the MIDI is completly offset. When I play on my controllers (3 of them chained) the latency reaches around 400 ms, so it gets impossible to play normally. Each time I have to restart live and then it works again.
My main concern is that I dont want this to happen during a live set... I do remove my external HD when playing live to prevent slow access, but I'm still afraid of such a MIDI problem occuring.
