lots of benefits compared to midi, easy networking over Ethernet is one of the biggest.

osc is the future and i'd love live to manage it, unfortunately the only apps that support osc in an acceptable way are not-so-easy-to-learn-patching-environments like max/msp or jmax. the other softwares i know use it only for synchronization that is using the half of the half of its possibilities.
encouraging the spread of a protocol like osc would possibly - and i hope so - start the production of osc related hardware controllers. that means not being constricted in 128 values for modulating a sound, because osc is fare more expressive than midi is. we are in a era in wich western music is becoming more and more microtonal... and i don't understand why i should use a technology (MIDI i mean) that limits in a hard way the expressivity of a musician. didn't you ever feel that midi controllers sound jumpy ? if you felt so just ask ableton to support osc...

Didn't know it existed, that would be great, I've always thought that 128 steps on everything was a ridiculously low resolution.
It's a minor miracle that midi is still with us at all when you look at how everything has advanced around it. It has to be a dead format really.

I wish everything (audio + data) went through something like Firewire 800??? Just one standard for everything would be too cool.

Yeah, I was thinking of Yamaha added OSC to the mLAN protocol we'd really have a standard for the future. I wish I had some cash to buy mLAN stuff, cos I really want to see it take off. The idea is just too great to fail...

OSC/mLan/Nodes/Sync

OSC, with machines linked by FireWire IP (or gigabit ethernet) between 2 (or more) machines could create some lovely sync and control for use live, added to integrated mLan for Audio ins and outs (like a souped up , synced up version of JACK or WormHole) possibilities would be really exciting for everything from live jamming sessions to installations, mega DJ sets between different people, Logic style 'distributed' 'Node' shared CPU etce etc etc... come on Ableton innovate once more!!

I would like to add my vote in favour here.
Ableton has continually chosen inovation over convention so far, adding osc would be a logical next step. We need to get rid of midi and somebody needs to lead the way on the sequencer front.
