MIDI trouble with my foot controller...

I just picked up an old Yamaha MIDI foot controller that I wanted to use with ableton, but whenever I try to map an Ableton control to any of the buttons, they all come up as "pitchbend" as if each button is sending the exact same midi message. Nothing happens when I press a button I mapped either, despite Ableton still seeing the activity and allowing it to be mapped. According to Yamaha's site, this controller transmits "Midi program change messages 1 through 10".

Is there anyway I can get this controller to work with Ableton at all? Is there some kind of plug-in out there that can detect certain midi messages and change them to more useful ones, or even just display exactly what message is being received? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a link to the specifications of this controller: http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/Con ... DY,00.html

I think you probably need to change the MIDI assignments within the controller itself. I used to use a MIDI foot controller and changing the assignments was a huge pain in the ass. Without the manual I would have never been able to do it.

Live doesn't respond to midi program change messages, you need to chantge the controller to send either midi CC or midi note on/off type messages.

You'll need to hunt down the manual to be able to programe the foot controller and change the settings.

If you can't change the settings then a midi translator & virtual midi cables should do the trick.

Sadly, there doesn't seem to be a way to program the controller at all, so can anyone recommend a good midi translator?

hi,

Max/MSP will do the trick.

I could email a converter to anyone who needs one - let me know what message you want program change turned into - e.g. 192 2 (p.c. ch 3) turns into '144 2 127' etc

I think I will probably use some kind of undefined control change message myself like 176 100 127
