MIDI Mapping the Crossfader

Hi, just recently I'm having trouble mapping the crossfader on my M-Audio MIDI controller to Ableton Live 6 in a variable way. I.e I can only assigned my slider so that it controls the mix either all the way to the left, all the way to the right or dead centre. Like I say it was fine before, it has only just started to happen, very annoying. Probably something stupid I have missed. Any help greatly appreciated.
