ableton not responding

hi,
i had a problem today with ableton.
i started it up and then realised my usb cable connecting my equipment for keyboard,soundcard etc was not plugged in.
when i plugged it in ableton froze and i had to force quit.
i tried to open it again but it wouldnt and when i highlighted over the ableton symbol in the dock it said "application not responding"
after a few tries it did start up and everything seemed fine.
but just now after leaving it idle for 1 hour,when i returned to continue playing there was no sound.
everything was still connected so i quit and tried to restart again.
but yet again "application not responding"is back.
anybody got any idea whats up with it?
