Ableton 7.0.1 crashes when I enable MIDI output sync. HELP!!

I have an axiom 25 which is syncing with an external drum machine. Its working great with my XP tower, but my XP laptop with the same axiom drivers and Ableton version crashes when I try to play something with external MIDI sync enabled. I've tried installing older axiom drivers which didn't help at all. any ideas?? the only difference between the computers is that my laptop can't connect the the internet, so it only has Windows updates up to last july, I believe.
