question about sample/bit rates

(please don't kill me)

I really have no idea about the pros and cons of these things. If I record in 24/96, am I putting any variable at stake? I've never really bothered about this before but I think this is a good time to ask. I think I remember someone saying sometime that CD or mp3 will only take a certain rate like 44.1 so it should be recorded at 44.1. Is that right?

CD will only take 44.1 khz of sample rate and 16 bit depth, but you can record higher, then dither down.

Many places recommend you do so, and some say that it makes no difference to record higher then dither down.

If you can record higher, I'd be with the side that says to do so.

cd tracks are wavs, just at 16/44. you can record up to 64/192. but a cd track cannot exceed 16/44.

so last question, why is sample rate only changed in io settings and bit rate changed in render settings?

you can change recording bit depth in the recording tab...

The Audio Engine fact sheet is a good read on sample and bit rate issues (related to Live 7):
