what about synching live to final scratch? just an idea that came to my mind. i know that this would be really a lot of work to implement, but think of the possibilities ... throwing some clips into live, pressing play and instantly scratching around with it ... or maybe just the possibility to scratch a single clip with this thing. it's not a must-have feature, but something worth thinking about, imho.

Wow, Final Scratch looks very cool to me.

Is looks like they are playing SMPTE on the turntable and interpret that to speed and location pointers for audioplayback.

Very creative for sure. But will it fit the Ableton Live concept??? I'm not sure...

The turntable concept/ instrument is a very young design... There are much better ways of things/ conceptializing multiple sound gestures.

That is, A 2D linear representation (an LP) is not the most intuitive or expressive means... we should be careful not to align our instrument design on a concept that is driven by the technology, rather than the performer.

Random access, pitch and time independency offers a whole new playing style.

Look at a cello, a few minutes toying around with it and you know the basic idea of how to play it. Then it takes a lifetime to master.

It is very expressive, extremely flexible in range, timbre, with some polyphony and great dynamic.

The same can be said of most orchestral instuments.

I don't think anyone has come up with the equivalent for our new instrument.

Think outside the disc.

well, i think too that it wouldn't really fit into the live concept, at least as it is now. but nonetheless i think it's good to mention such ideas; if they will be realised or not doesn't really matter, i use live anyway, as it is.

but anyway i believe that final scratch is really something very creative. it's nice to see innovative products like live or final scratch coming on the market right now, i hope this gives electronic music the new push it needs.

i'm not a dj. so i am already thinking outside the (hard-)disc but i have bought some turntables and i have planned to learn scratching, just because i like the sound and i am sick of collecting scratch samples. it doesn't matter to me how this works - it is that sound that i want. having final scratch for controlling clips in live would be very handy, but it's definitely not a must, it's just - as i titled it - a weird idea. and: if there is a better controller for achieving what i want than a turntable, then i'd be glad to hear from that and use it
