Converting a stereo file to mono in audacity or in Live?

Hi,

I'm using Audacity as my audio editor in live.

I can't seem to find an easy way to convert a stereo file to a mono file in Audacity. Can anyone guide me through how to do it?

Converting a stereo to mono in Live alone isn't possible. Is it?

just use the utility plugin in Live. If you want to convert it permanently, freeze and flatten or resample.

I am trying to cut down on some of the CPU processing load...will the utility plug help in that way?

The only way I know to do it in Audacity is to split the file into 2 mono and then save

to save cpu, the best would be to use the utility and then resample. After that you can use your "new" mono file instead of the old stereo one.
Just useing the utility on the stereo file will in opposite make your CPU load a little bit higher, cause you are still playin the stereofile AND process it afterwards.
I think you can use freeze and flatten also, but you have to find out one thing:

If you freeze in live, live creates a 32bit file, so sometimes if you freeze, this is good for your CPU load and bad for your HD Performance.
I THINK if you flatten the frozen Track, Live creates a new file with the projects bitrate, but i m not sure, so check this out if you don t want to run into new problems.
