free piano plugins?

hi, I just gave away an old psr something yamaha keyboard that I used as a midi controller and also to practice with its built in piano sound. I am going to get just a normal controller in a couple of days and would like to continue to practice with a piano sound for the time being before eventually getting an acoustic piano. does anyone know of any free plugins with decent piano voices? I actually thought the psr one was really good. It did not sound fake and at the same time was not trying to emulate an acoustic piano (which is also, although another level of, fake). I have a mac.

it's not urgent. and I don't want a trial. thanks for the suggestion though, I have tried pianoteq but obviously it's not free.

I recommend the mda piano vsti. Its really old, but still works well for me as quick piano sound, and its UB on the mac. There is also the the mda epiano which is also quite good for a rhodes sound.

I can't seem to get this working. I unzip the sit file and just this thing comes out and all it says is mda piano. what is this? I put it in my vst folder but it didn't show up in live.
this is windows?

Whjen you say 'UB' version, you are on a mac, right? In the apple folder of the audio units folder, open the MIDI DSL device- a general MIDI piano that sounds great. Most of the chicago guys were usgin GM modules, so it immedaitely has that house sound.

wow, this will definately do for now. it's not ideal, but it's amazing what you can find already installed on the machine. thanks so much for the info!
probably a stupid question, but is it sampled? it sounds really hissy at high velocities.

not sure if you can use it on a mac, but i'm a huge fan of rgcaudio's sfz player, and there's a soundfont out there called splendid that kicks ass.

I got a lite version of this when I bought a Padkontrol. Absolutely jaw-droppingly good. Right up there with the huge multi gig sampled stuff quality-wise. And a very small file since it uses physical modelling instead of samples, as you say.
