Not sure whether it works on the mac but a great free alternative to the roger nichols digital inspector is the following combination:
Sonalksis
Free G precision VU meter -

PSP Audioware -
free analogue style VuMeter -
http://www.pspaudioware.com/plugins/vmeter.html
Spectrum Analyser -
Fre(a)koscope -
http://mdsp.smartelectronix.com/ffttools/
Oscilloscope -
s(M)exoscope -
http://bram.smartelectronix.com/plugins.php?id=4
which I frequently use to bugfix technical issues with my tracks - well worth a look....

So you are putting the VSTs in the VST directory and the Audio Units into the Components directory?

you have to turn on external plug ins in the preferences.
a small box has to be checked
