God this guy either IS a great engineer or knows one. Does anyone know how he's getting his claps/snares to sound like that? he is obviously boosting the higs on a buss that includes his claps or snares + high hats/cymbals etc...
but wow, there's more and it's consistent on all his records...
Thanks in advance,
MR

that's rare. What do you think he's doin to get that "sssmak" out o fhis snares/clips so consistently tight like that?

I know for certain he does everything himself, I asked him once. He mentioned he listens to hip hop a lot and used to smoke loads of weed, but not any more. And he has just a computer, a turntable to sample stuff and a simple midi keyboard. Plus a gigantic record collection.
I went to the Rekids label party in Panorama Bar two weeks ago, it was amazing!!
Matthew Edwards is one of the best producers of these times.

Rekid
all brilliant
EDIT: and about those snares, I haven't got a clue. Just good choice of source material, EQ, effects and levels. but what how when ...

wonder if anyone out there has any comment on his set up, or how he's treating his perc tracks.

Yeah that's him- listen to the last two tracks, "grindhouse" and the one below. His perc is very tight. I can hear that he is grouping his perc and boosting in some highs, but additionally he is processing that bus again, but how? it sounds great. It's not a limiter, it might be some parallel mixed back in with LMC-1, or outboard gear. God damn, whatever it is, it's consistent on most of his records, which is very impressive to me. Any ideas? here's a couple you tube exampoles too, though I can't say I like either one of these tunes as much as other stuff I have heard by him. Anyway, good engineering to say the least. WTF?

good source material, eq-ing, good compression and try bitter sweet [it's a plug] for getting a nice 'crystal punching sound on perc. and snares [i recently use it a lot and it's the dogs bollocks for getting those sounds to really cut through with a crunch]
works with some other material as well.

it sounds very squashed up. Somewhat gated. Also the right samples
http://sonalksis.com/index.php?section_id=104
its just a hit in the dark and i can't really hear the stuff on other than some cheap headphones atm, i'll walk to the studio and listen a little.
perhaps a little go with editing some samples (i actually came up with a like snare sound cutting the first transient hit of a sample and pitching it!)
with the hihats:
http://www.voxengo.com/product/tmodder/
might be used to add more shiny hit to the hihats.
Just some suggestions while sitting with a laptop down here
(Btw i also found the loop to be somewhat edgy. I archieved a liking once i had a normal rather pumping compressor at the drum bus, then added a sonalksis TBK3 wtihout turning the other off. That gave me a stunningly pumping and rough/edged/gated experience (tweaking the settings of the TBK3))

---okay---
well not the effects you completely after i told you about, thats true. But i believe the snares are just done with some grind editing. They sound like distorted noise or something in that corner. Again i got something close just by using an ordinary sample and cutting + pitching.
The hihats have some distortion to them, a bitcrushing effect. They are sitting really clean in the freq spectrum, he probably isolated them with an equalizer.
ALSO a very important fact is, that there is nothing to disturb them where they sit. No strings or such around, so they are able to fill a lot.
And everything is somewhat lo-fied (bitcrushing, sample rate reduction what do i know)
---
I am rather new at production stuff, you're obviously much more experienced than me . However a different sets of ears and another mind sometimes gives different results (stupid thing to say but just so you don't feel/say i'm some sort of newbie thinking he know what's going on, because its obviously based on some guessing).
