connecting 2 audio interfaces...motu 828mk2 + edirol ua101

hello,
can i connect these two audio interfaces with an optical cable ?they both have optical in and out.
if so i open ableton , make new track and then configure ins and outs ?
or optical way is only for soundcard to adat connection?
