The subject line says it all. I am planning on upgrading my CPU from e6600 to q6600 (quad core). Everything else stays the same - same mobo, same ram, etc. I might add another gig of ram (2x512) and get it to 3gb, but I doubt that will change anything.

So the question is will I get blue screen and have to reinstall XP, or should a chip swap still work with my current install?

Xp should be only longer to boot the first time cause he will install what he needs at startup.

ok cool, thanks. I know when I replaced the mobo and chip, XP farted a blue screen, so I was worried and wanted to prep the Abes to up my unlock count. But if it goes just fine, then I won't worry about it.

On paper, xp install scans its hardware every time it starts up, and the OS doesn't become "locked" to any hardware when ya install it.

For now, yes...I was about to get the MPB when my accountant called and told me that I have to pay a very large tax bill in two months, so I decided to wait on the MBP till later this year.

The bluescreen appears only when you change the chip7.. usually included in the motherboard hehe

I'm going to be doing this also, so I'm interested as well. Had the damn Q6600 since August, still haven't gotten around to installing it! Never done this before...(might put another HD in as well)

i believe it might run, but not use all 4 cores effectively without a re-install of the base OS.. i remember this being the case when dual core machines came out.. people swapped chips - and wondered what all the fuss was about.. little did they know only a single core was being used as that's all XP was configured to use during the setup process.. can't imagine it's much different for quad cores..

Aren't you a lawyer? You can either sue someone and buy 10 MBPs or vote republican and get lower taxes.

I'm happy to be writing you from my newly installed Q6600. To make a long story short, the replacement worked just fine, no need to reinstall the OS.

What about live license on the computer ?

Live 7 and Live 6 both boot up ok. No asking to re-register with HQ.
