Help with creating loops correctly

Greetings,
I have recorded an audio track from my drum machine of drums and bass.
I then go in and try to isolate the 4 bar progression and create a loop in Live.
I move the start of the clip and the start of he loop to the beginning of the section, which is a bar or two from the beginning of the clip due to a lead in count. I move the end of the loop and end of the clip markers to as close to the end of the section as I can.
I select loop in the sample control and loop up on the top, next to the punch in and punch out.
I play the loop and it goes past the end I have noted, there is silence, then it repeats from the start. As if it has dead space at the end. Also, occasionally, it seems to move back a beat or two, kind of a hiccup. The processor indicator is never over 2.
Any thoughts or pointers to slicing and dicing clips into effective loops.
