How to do a studio mix cd

I want to use ableton to do a studio mix cd in arrangement view. I can line the tracks up in arrangement view but my question relates to automating the eq'ing, levels and so forth.

Is it best to perform the set live in session view whilst recording to arrangement view and then editing the automations afterwards?

No way, man!!! If you're doing a studio mix (or, cheating, as some might say...) the best way to automate eq/fx/volume/fades, etc, etc... is using automation envelopes. Unfortunately, Live can only display one envelope at a time, but everything (pretty much) in Live is automatable.

Check the manual for Automation Envelopes. It's super easy once you've tried it.

If you own Live 7, it can display multiple automation lines.

you can arrange the songs how you want and then record your envelopes with midi-overdub.
at least I'm doing it that way.

the way I do it is to mix it live in session view, using a faderfox controller and the knobs on my Nord Rack for levels and eq, and recording the automation.
Then I switch to arrangement view and clean up the automation and move stuff around a bit if I missed a mixpoint.
It's maybe not the fastest or easiest way but starting with a "live" mix may give a bit more interesting results than if you just program it from the start in arrangement.
