'Bassline' bass sound: what is it? how do you get it?

Post by kpa » Tue Apr 15, 2008 1:46 pm

HI,

how you get the type of bass sound in this track (count & sinden: beeper):
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=GUZCV95SCXE

i've had a try to get something like it, and got something remotly similar by messing with the filter adsr settings.

is it as simple as saying for e.g. square wave (which i think it might be) with attck at x, no decay etc... if so what settings would you suggest to start with.

any help appreciated, cheers.

you're in the ballpark with env->filter, attack might be manually tweaked and not just a static setting. it really just sounds like a Juno 106 pulse/PWM sound to me, kind of a standard wobbly bass that's been around since the olden days of speed garage (you could record the moves on the 106's front panel via MIDI and then edit the MIDI data). should be pretty easy to recreate. there might be some decay & release on the back side of the envelope, sounds like the filter closes up a bit when a key is released. but the raw sound itself is not difficult at all to do on just about any half decent synth, software or hardware.

it's one of those suck-it-and-see things..... you'll have to play with the ADSR while you're playing the bass part, because the way you play the part will affect the way the filter works in your track and vice versa. there's a "sweet spot" where the notes played and the filter action intersect...trying to describe it is actually harder than just doing it.

square wave, automate filter with lfo.

edit: or if you have zebra2 this kind of sound can also be achieved by routing mseg to the filter.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=nZYDmw2pYOk This tutorial should help. Uses Massive, but can be applied to most subtractive synths.

Nice one thanks, will check this out.

Thanks for the other points, all very helpful. I'll be giving it a go later.

It is a old kind of sound in a way, much like Uk garage from years ago, but it seems to a popular sound on the music blogs. I was wondering how it was done, its a good sound that i like, but it's one of those sounds that will quickly become naff (if it hasnt already) and we'll be hearing it all summer in the UK before it goes the way of Uk garage etc.

Cheers,
