Drum Racks + Axiom 25

Hey I'm just gettin into drum racks, and my main problems are these:
I have 8 trigger pads up the top right of my Axiom 25, and they don't seem to relate to the drum rack much at all. Check out figures A and B:

So when I'm pressing all eight triggers, as in figure A, a whole wacky bunch are triggered, not the ones I'm trying to press.
and as you can see in figure B, when I scroll up (I'm only pressing four buttons this time), it doesn't scroll the rack for me like it's supposed to.

I believe this is because I have my Axiom set up as a control surface wrong, is that right? That's the impression I get from other posts. Here's a picture of how I set up mine:

Does that look right? When I plug in my Axiom it is installed as Axiom 25 and Audio Device. In midi ports it comes up just as USB Audio Device (1), so then I tried making it a control surface, and it doesn't work until I assign the control surface input/outputs to USB Audio device. Is that how I should be doing it?
CONFUSED

kazaam,

there is also a live pack available in the "Downloads" section of this site that contains some info specific to the Axiom.

Scroll down about midway on the page to the 3rd Party Products set.

Install that and read through the lessons. They set up the Axiom in detail.

Hi kazaamBLAM,

your setup seems ok from what I can see.
Do the encoders and transport buttons work?

Btw: you don't need to activate the sync buttons for the
Axiom's ports. You only need to activate the remote buttons
if you want to manually reassign the controls to different
functions in Live.

If you haven't done so already click on the 'Dump' button.
Live will then setup the necessary presets on your Axiom
after you confirmed the following dialog.

Please let me know if your problem still persists after this.

cheers,
Jan

still having issues

hi guys,
Thanks for the tips,
I downloaded that tute on the axiom installation, and it did contain a bunch of stuff I didn't know about... Did it all, and it works fine as a controller now, but still with the exception of drum racks, which still won't play in the manner which I think it's supposed to... That is (have another look at the pics in my original post), with the 8 pads on the axiom corresponding to the pads in drum racks, and automatically controlling the next set of samples when I scroll the drum rack up to another group of samples. Any ideas?
To be honest, the controller aspect of the Axiom isn't really that useful to me anyway, I find the mapping in Ableton so easy I just assign things to it whenever I need them... Thanks for the tips though, don't fail me now!

just bought an axiom25 aswell.. had some troubles getting it workin but now it's working extremely well.

here are my suggestions:

install axiom drivers (do not rely on windows builtin)
setup the control surface in the upper part of the midi menu as axiom25, then click DUMP
now your preset 18,19,20 are supposed to work as stated in the specific axiom tutorial: http://www.ableton.com/_common/download ... torial.zip

mine did, out of the box. just make sure, when you switch preset on the keyboard, that groups A B and C are all selected (such a stupid thing caused me an headache, i wasnt' able to get the encoder work because of this)

btw: you don't need the sync option for the keyboard, just remote and track

Hey man,

I know this is a very late post - & you've probably given up etc

But i know what you mean about the Axiom and drum racks!

And it seems to have nothing to do the drivers or your settings. Its that the axiom drivers enable the eight pads to control the 8 midi notes for impulse. (i think its like C2-C3 - ie only the white keys) - NOT drum racks - as they use very different midi notes - they start much lower and go up in semitones (ie use the black keys etc). I have a feeling that the notes for the drum racks are usually what something like a 'trigger-finger' etc would use.

The presets that load on the axiom from Ableton are (16-19) with the extra one 20. 18 is the one for impulse, but it wont work for drum racks, unless each time you load a rack you move the position of the cells until they match your pads.Which is bloody anoying

You can see what I mean about the impulse ready notes triggering about an octave or so higher by where watching the little squares flash on the micro grid in the racks.

If you are serious about using racks man - you probably need to make a custom preset in that enigma software that you can download from the m-audio site.

OR! - cough, cough... ableton could just make a new update of the drivers with a preset designed for drum racks... but maybe they all have the flu and not enough time or something

bensaddiction, you've got some wrong ideas here sir.

Presets 18-20 on the Axiom 25 are for Ableton using the Live pack. Preset 17 and 16 are not.
On preset 18 the pads work for either Impulse or Drum Racks. In Impulse they work as expected and run all eight slots. On Drum Racks they run the bottom eight of whatever 16 are in focus. If you scroll up, they're still the bottom eight. It's not done with simple MIDI note mapping. Rather it's some kind of Ableton magic. But that's the deal.

On preset 20, they trigger clips in Session view. On 19 they do nothing.

Drum Racks and Impulse work great with Axiom 25 classic. Now the Pro -- that's another story.
