live 7 + vista ultimate = no love

hey...
i recently bought an asus notebook, intel dual core t2730 @ 1.73ghz. 2gb ram, ati radeon mobility hd3470 256mb ram, 160gb hdd, running vista ultimate, with the aero theme (transparency enabled) and i'm having a bit of hardtime with live 7.
firstly, there's an aesthetic issue. after booting up live, i want to open a set. after doubleclicking the .als, and upon opening the set, the screen goes white, with only a few lines remaining of live's UI. 3-5 seconds later, the set is open and it's back to normal. not really a problem per=se, but it's not pretty.
secondly, i sometimes get a message saying windows has switched to basic, because an application (live 7) is not compatible with the vista aero theme. not really a problem as i want to use the windows 98 classic theme anyway. to gain some extra juice. now, here comes the real problem. i switch to windows classic theme, and suddenly live lags. the play cursor staggers and does not move smoothly anymore, the vumeters also lag and only update once per second, and the cpu meter idles at 20% in a set with 14 audio tracks and one midi track with battery 3. same thing if i completely disable "themes" service. ok, now back to the vista aero theme, transparency enabled, live is all happy again. cursor and meters move like they should and moreover, the cpu meter now idles at 16% in the same set.
i apologize for the long post but this has been bugging me ever since i bought this laptop.

then use Aero!
Timur has done extensive tests and posted this nugget of info to the forum already.
on my vista tower, I got much much better performance using Aero over Windows basic mode. Apparently, some plugins will force Vista back to basic mode (?)... double check that, there might even be a list. This is bad.
Better performance not as in my CPU %% was lower with the same set, but that with Aero turned on a much higher CPU%% could be achieved before I heard audio crackles and spurts.

Hi,
Running Vista Ultimate 64 (no SP1 yet) in Aero mode and I am finding I can't stop sample playback (from device/folder browser) via the transport stop button. Anyone else seeing this? I am running beta drivers for my audio card (got into beta testing recently) for m-audio Delta66 w/omni studio breakout box and that is working ok except for the systray interface.

what kind of audio interface do you have? if youre just running the AC97 with ASIO4all then i see exactly the same thing on Vista. on the same machine with XP ASIO4all runs very smoothly. most of these problems disappear on Vista when i use my Firebox, but the performance is still inferiror on the same machine than with XP so i just mainly use XP.
Ive almost given up entirely on Vista and might wait for my next machine to run it fulltime, the overheads are just too high for the small benefit.
the current lappie is no slouch, 2.2ghz core 2 Duo, 4gb ram. 8600m GT 512mb.

Following that simple logic og Blank I could just say: Install Reaper.
This is not so much a problem of Vista, but of Ableton Live. On my and other people's PC Live's GUI gets into serious troubles on Vista. Turning on Aero
does help, but
Live's performance is still worse than on XP. Using any other non DAW software or using Reaper on the very same setup does not show any of the performance problems on Vista that Live does.

If you want to use live install xp or ask Timur his opinion.
I still think that vista stinks a lot, even if reaper is running well on it. For a trouble free setup on pc xp is the way to go.

Hi,
So I take it you all feel it is Live on Vista even with Aero enabled that Live's performance is not quite there? Have the abe's even tested much on Vista 64/Ultimate version/etc...? I'm just happy I now have audio in it using my PCI Delta66 w/Omni Studio breakout box. I haven't done much with it other than get things somewhat installed. I have to figure out why a couple of the packs are saying I'm missing either 14 or 22 things (session drums packs, the one with the MIDI one) but that's another search in threads.
