say i have a bunch of clips and i'm using 'follow action' set to a 16th note, so that a new clip is triggered every 16th note... i was wondering if it is possible to swing the actual triggering of the clips... i obviously know that the MIDI and audio content WITHIN the clip can be swung, but i'm wondering if the actual 'follow action' function itself can be swung... this would be really really useful in creating randomized algorithmic beats, especially with single shot samples...

first off, its not possible to set "follow actions" to 16th notes.

so the answer is still no.

why don't you try making clips that only last 1/16th?

that's what i mean...

the clips are set to the equivalent length of a 16th note...

i want the 16th note long clips to swing as they are triggered.

anyway, as you said, i don't think this is possible.

now you have 12 times more resolution to your follow actions

so, by your logic. if my set bpm is 90 bpm then 1080bpm is what will get the job done?

try setting the follow action to 1 sixteenth. that's how I do it

for example, your clip is 90 bpm

set Live to 180 bpm. Set the clip to "180Bpm" (still plays normally)

now put a follow action of 1 sixteenth (!)

it will now be 1 32nd...

right?

now keep multiplying the tempo, and you'll get finer and finer resolutions. involve some factors of 3 and get some swing in there..

it's just an idea

the closest you will get is by using MIDI yoke or IAC and then using a track/clips to trigger the clips from MIDI notes

I don't understand the "can't set follow actions to 16th notes" thing.
Under follow actions there are 3 boxes. If i fill them in as 0, 0, and 1, I thought that meant that on every 16th the next follow action will occur.

If not, then what does this mean?
I'll have acess to the manual later but in the meantime I'm curious...

yes, you are right: the first box is for bars, the second for quarter notes and third for 16th notes, so a 0 0 1 setting would yield a 16th note length.

thanks for the advice about the higher tempo settings... interesting concept... what would the settings be to yield the equivalent of a 50% ableton swing?

problem: max tempo is 999

so I had to go only from 100 to 600 (*6)

the settings for approx 50% swing between two eighth notes are:

clip 1: follow action next: 0.3.3
clip 2: follow action first: 0.2.1

sure, it's a little confusing to figure out the numbers, but it's not THAT hard. I started with eighth notes, so worth 2 16ths,

multiply by 6, each follow action should be 12 16ths at no swing = 3 beats or 0.3.0

then I just tried adding 3 to the first, and taking 3 from the second

I had first created a reference clip which was flattened at 50% swing

oh boy...

problem is i have something like 900 single shot clips:)

well, are they all on 1/16 triggering?

you can set follow actions on a multiple selection..

how are they laid out? 900 clips on a single track (900 scenes?)

do you need 'other' as a trigger? or is 'next' usable?
