Can anyone advise me on where to hunt if I wanted to book out a few cheap flights around europe? Just wondering if there are any gold mines which I should keep my eye on.

From personal experience, Ryanair and Easyjet may be cheap (even when you've added their hidden costs like taxes and credit card fees), but they treat their customers pretty badly. Ryanair is the worst. Easyjet marginally better, but still appalling.
My flights with Air Berlin have been ok, especially with large luggage.
Definitely look into train (and chunnel) - can be cheap if you book in advance.

+1 on Air Berlin.
Busses can be otherwordly cheap.

Also worth noting about Ryanair, you might be faced with separate fee for musical instruments at check-in, at least if it's in specialized instrument carrying case (compact midi controllers and similar, stuffed inside your normal luggage bag won't get charged thou). And that fee might exceed the cost of the flights itself!

does the Euro-rail pass still exist?
Used to be unlimited journeys in side a specified time frame.

Yes, Ryanair are utter bastards.

In spain you have very cheap flights with a company called "clickair". Check Swiss-air for cheap-flights within europe as well, I had very good prices twice with them.

Be careful with Ryan-Air, they might be very cheap, but in most cases they are going to some small, remote airports far away from the place that you actually want to go to. You will have to pay for long bus-transfers to the city (if nobody is coming to catch you at the airport).

Trains are mostly quite expensive in europe, but might be worth checking, especially if you buy tickets in advance over the internet there might be special offers.

Travelling by bus is cheaper, but mostly very unconfortable. One big company offering bus-connections all over europe is called "Eurolines"

I took people couple of times, unlike the agencies ,that free web service is kind of pre selection, only nice and interesting people seem to be using it
there must be similar possibilities in other countries. The costs are negotiable, depending on the car, fuel consumption but usually around 20% of train ticket. If it is popular route like Frankfurt-Hamburg Berlin, Amsterdam or Paris you may find a ride even in the last moment. You can always select a car big enough to accommodate you gear too.

I use Ryanair and Easyjet from London Stansted.

No problems. They're punctual, safe, and cheap. They don't always fly into the main city airports but to a nearby outlying airport (which looked like somebody's back yard in Venice!) to save on landing fees, but it's usually pretty easy to get a bus or train into the city.
