live would be alright if it had:

- a solution for the 128 parameter-problem
- detachable windows (espacially splitting for dual monitor ARRANGE - MIXER)
- Folder Tracks

I think some things will never come because ableton chosed a software concept that has advantages for changing and improving features like adding new functions, more buttons (side chaining, drum mapping,.....) and has disadvantages for changing big things (window detaching). Once u have chosen a concept, it might be too complicated to develop things that are usually self-evident for a good host nowadays. The problem is probably that it was only a DJ Software in the beginning.

Maybe the 128 par problem is as complicated as the not-detachable-window-thing and there will be no solution the next 10 years or so. Becuase i dont think that they dont know about their problems, they are just caught in their concept which first seemed to be so attractive but is unusefull for users who got used to big (powerfull)hosts like cubase, sonar or logic. Dont expect ableton to admit their weaknesses, they would probably never say: "hey y`all , the essential functions u are looking for will never come because we are not flexible enough for that". They would lose many consumers who still hope.

So i guess there will be many many new nice features in the future but certain missing ones will never come. So the question is if its worth to get used to a host that might never be satisfying.

I am really into sx 3 but wanted a change, was so happy about live`s simplicity. One week later..........i am checking out sonar. Yet, VERY NICE!!

Maybe Ableton live will always be the best and only true DJing software, but never be a real good music producing software.

I have Cubase SX3 too. I rarely use it these days because Live is much better for arranging.

I agree that if you are coming from Cubase's mixer options that Live's seems a bit inflexible. It's very likely that in Live 8 they'll have the dual screen option and possibly folder tracks as many people have requested them.

You seem very negative about Live. You should have done your homework better if these features are essential to you. The dual screen thing and folder tracks would be nice but they are not essential in my view. Where is the Session view in Cubase? The option to on the fly drop and drag without losing sync, even the bloody render all audio (instead of having to render every single track individually). Cubase has it's strengths but it's like driving a car with triangle shaped wheels for composing - ie a pain in the butt. And SOnar is no different to Cubase, their strengths are the same.

BTW - I am not a DJ. But I have used Live twice for live performance and it kicks Cubase's butt to the kerb for that too. I have produced an alternative rock album on it just fine, mostly in arrangement mode, so it's really a state of mind as to how limited Live is. Of course, SX3 does not have native sidechaining compression, drum racks, and nice virtual instruments like the Live 7 Suite either... that made more of a difference to my recording than folder tracks and dual monitor split screens.....

Hi,

I would be positiv about live if i could automate the fm8 matrix which is very essential for me. Imagine u have found the instrument that gives u exactly what u`ve always needed and becuase of the host it cant be used properly.

But i even said "try to get along somehow, cause live`s concept is just more than nice for my minimalistic music thing" but then, the following problem occured:

http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=90504

I usally use up to 14 fm8 in a project. Imagine how that could sound with that prob ;)

I think u would agree that this is reason enough to not use live, dont u?

I think Sonar is much better than cubase.

Did any ableton worker mention that dual monitor support will ever come?
