Im off to america in september and was thinking to get a either macbook or a decent laptop
i would like to buy a macbook. But i dont really wanna be spending that type of money on another one in a year's time. What is the life of a macbook?
or do i buy a decent spec pc laptop and expect to buy another in a couple of years?
any advice anybody has would be great

Wha?
PCs and Macs become obsolete at the same rate. There's no reason to upgrade one more frequently than the other.
My Macbook still runs like a champ since I got it 8 months ago, and I don't plan on upgrading until some piece of software requires me to, or until Applecare runs out in 2 more years.
Just get the Mac.

For dekstop get quad core PC
For notebook, mac is better, you can run OSX or WINDOWS.

On standar PC notebook you can run widnows, and osx only with hacks and problems......... (hackintosh)

MAC is the best choice, then you can decide if widnows or OSX :D

since Macs and PC's now use basically the same technology I don't think there's much difference in the timeframe of becoming obsolute between the two. Both platforms will probably last you anywhere between 3 and 5 years depending on how up-to-date you want to be.

I still think you can get a pc for a lower price than similarly specced Mac but I think you really have to look at what OS feels good for you. Admittedly a Mac these days can run both OSX and Windows but while this is a nice extra I don't think it's gonna be a major point of consideration for many people since both OSX and Windows XP are perfectly good OS's (i have no experience with Vista myself) and mosty people probably wouldn't want to be switching between 2 OS's regularly on the same computer.

Personally I prefer Windows XP over OSX but that may just be because I use a Mac at work and I don't want to be reminded too much of work when I'm at home :P

Not quite. Macs have lots of little features that PCs don't. Stuff like firewire ports, the magsafe connector, superior screens, great battery life, built in webcam, awesome warranty/support... etc.
Not to mention, OSX beats the pants off Windows any day.

More girls will want to talk to you if you're sporting a Mac.

IMO, Mac. Witness the number of folks migrating to PC to Mac.

OSX and XP on one machine... best of both worlds.

Spend your time making music, not tweaking your computer.

Well, what's the point really if it's just to regurgitate what's already been done and to continue to be overloaded with crap?

Just get 2 pieces of wood and make some noise.

There are FAR more things to do with computers than that! And many of them have nothing to do with music.

And there ARE still computers musicians out there that don't rely on remixing/sampling/etc, but originality and talent. They're just getting harder to find among the terabytes of drivel!
