Controlling Redrum with Ext. Instrument - Note velocities

Another question on midi note velocity:
I'm controlling Redrum in Reason with an External Instrument channel within Live. Midi note velocities are not being recognized in this case. I've made sure the 'Velocity' option is turned up to 100% on the left hand side of the piano roll.
Extra credit: Is there a way that Live can replicate the shuffle effect that you can get with Redrum and the 909 vsts? Beat repeat is good, but it adds the element of chance/randomness...
Thanks again.

Make sure the midi clip's groove is set to swing, then apply groove amount via the groove control from 0 -100 at the top left by the tempo

Yep, I understand Live's swing engine. The Redrum shuffle has a different sound from Live's built-in swing function, which is more like a 909. Wish Redrum was a VST.

I dont use reason but from what i understand your using the clip envelopes velocity, you should use the velocity stalks in the piano roll to mess with velocity.

That's what I'm using (the stalks in the piano roll), but the sample volume always remains at peak volume.

in redrum, have you got all the 'vel' knobs turned up (next to the 'level' knobs on each sample slot)?

No the volumes are set for each sample as they should be mixed in Redrum. I'm controlling the Redrum samples in Live via midi and want to add velocity variations on different notes of the same sound.
You should simply be able to turn down the Volume stalks at the bottom of the piano roll, but that doesn't work in this case.

So, If you trigger the same redrum from reasons sequencer, will you get the velocity to work?

err.. are you using redrum's pattern seq, or have you programmed a beat in Live?
what you're asking for works just fine - i've just had it running here - but redrum needs to have each slot's 'vel' knob turned up, otherwise it has no way to respond to the velocity data coming in from Live.

yes but do you have the vel (velocity) knobs on the redrum channels (they are next to the level knobs) turned all the way up to the right?
if these knobs are set to the 12 o'clock position then velocity information from live will have no effect on the redrum

Ahhh, I see. That makes perfect sense. Will try that out and report back. Thanks guys, very much appreciated.

Hey guys, turning the velocity control on for each sample in Redrum enables you to control it with Live. Works like a charm.
Thanks again for the help!

no worries.
the redrum also has vel knobs for various other things like tone and pitch so you can use high velocities to control the tone and pitch of each drum etc.
