its the one thing I have never understood with PC users
some proudly proclaim how they spent X weeks building
their uber powerful PC..
and what a false economy it is!?! considering:
- problem solving it when something goes wrong,
- even on minimum wage the time spent building it
- incompatabilites with software/hardware
- the nightmare of upgrades
by all means roll your own computer
but i'd rather get something that works day 1,
can be supported and that lets me get on with making music...
even $800 seems way expensive for a mac with no support/high maintenance...

what you seem to be missing here is that the type of people sage enough to do this kind of stuff don't NEED support, and may even relish the high maintenance factor. It's a hobby - we don't need hand-holding much.

is it stable?
I´m thinking of building one ( quad ) for leopard. but i don´t know if its good for music production??
Any experience ??

also, yes it is stable. tons of people have built these. i've never built one, but am excited to get started.

Not a total dumb ass, there are no guarantees that a new update to your applications or OS won't break a frankenmac. That said, I'm tempted to start on building one with a rack mount version in mind, larger, faster HD's and more of them, even swappable if you wanted to do that, video card, ability to get a motherboard that can handle the next generation chip, Express card audio card offers lowest latency possible.
The main thing being rack mount form factor, same computer for stage and studio. Laptops are great and all, but a desktop offers the ability to take an LCD and have the bare minimum in a live setting, and a mac mini is a joke for upgrading etc.
I have a friend who works in hardware at Apple and I'm really curious as to what he thinks of Psystar, but just in case he hasn't heard of this company, I don't want to be the one to tell Apple.

Yeah I just chatted with him about it. They just aren't worried about Psystar I guess, and don't want bad publicity from it.

I dunno, I built my quad PC for around $600, it took me maybe a few hours and runs like a dream. How much does a quad MAC with 4gb of ram cost these days?

My Mhackintosh runs fine really. Only trouble I had is with the liquidmix, that runs on a separate pci card aside from the m-audio1814. It crashes Logic. Btw Logic and Leopard are both legal - I own the legit copies - clearly the osx installation comes from a non authorized release. But it runs really fine, once you get the proper drivers for everything. Mine was bitchy due to the Ati x1800xt card, but with some googling and kext editing, it now runs well. Main target was to run Logic 8 and he work spent in putting it up delivers. And it runs from a usb hd
Got a real Imac besides and I can hardly tell which machine I'm using when I need Osx.
