recent poor performance on macbook

I have only this week started to encounter very poor performance on my
apple macbook, OSX 10.4.11,
2.16 GHZ intel core duo
1 GB 667 DDR2 SD RAM
6.7 G of available hard disc space left
104 G hard disc used
The CPU meter is peaking a lot, play back is not smooth and is glitchy. Live sets that the computer was capable of processing last week cannot be processed this week.
The fan comes on and at high speed when before it never was audible, only very rarely would it be noticed before.
I have done a hardware test using the mac CD and everything is fine in this regards.
Has anyone encountered the same issues lately (perhaps one of the OSX updates)
Any help or ideas appreciated (no mac vs pc rubbish please)

Hi,
have you tried, if turning off Airport solves the problem?
Best,

Try freeing more space on your hard disk, the laptop could be using a lot of virtual memory with only 1gb of ram and maybe there's not enough space for it.
My macbook pro, with 3gb ram, creates a swap file of 11gb !!!
Are you using Analog ?

Hi there
Big thanks to everyone. Turning off airport worked and I will free up some more space for even better results. Yes Dr Zolberg I use analog a little bit but also Reaktor, Massive and Rob Papen synths and plugins. All processor intensive but hadnt been too much of a problem before. i think I need to put my sample library on an external drive and just keep the samples I am working with on the lap top.
Thanks again

I asked if you use Analog because multiple instances generate random dropouts.
Check your set, maybe you introduced a second Analog.

I had the same problem after the last airport update, there is a thread about it somewhere, I followed the instructions of how to roll back the airport update to the previous version and everything was back to normal.
