midi cutting in and out

hello, got a midi problem. tut tut.
im using a oxygen8 v2 as a midi controller for the latest release of ableton. Im using the midi out to send midi signals to the program through a edirol fa-66. The problem is that the sound generated from which ever dievice im using keeps cutting out for a while then cutting back in. The midi track in indicator is still lighting up when the sound from the device stops working.
anyone know what is happening?
