Connecting ALP5s thru Saffire LE

Noob alert. I've got my new ALP5 studio monitors plugged in and hooked up to my Saffire LE with 1/4" balanced cables. My audio preferences are set up right on my lappie, but lo I hear nary a sound. The set-up says to "consult the pin diagram" on the back of the monitors, and I am thus informed:
+signal, tip
-signal, ring
shield, sleeve
I don't understand this because there's only one way to stick the 1/4" into the jack. Am I supposed to do something particular?
