Can Live output 5.1 mixes?

The only way to do it is to rewire all the tracks to a surround capable mixdown software then do the mix from there.

why Ableton thought it necessary to include video support before proper surround is just... baffling. why? WHY?
i'm not going to bother upgrading again until it's included.
i shouldn't have to fuck around with pre-made dummy clips and spend hours determining send levels and setting up aux buses...

I'm really interested in this for some future projects I'm involved with. I found a program called Vortex Surround Mixer that you can rewire Live to and you can use it to configure pretty much any multi-channel set-up you want.
It has some excellent features like fully recordable automation and tons of preset sound trajectories that let you do things like spiralling sounds or even getting sounds to 'flock' together. Pretty cool stuff.
The license is fairly pricey ($260) but I've tried the demo and it seems fairly stable although it does seem to have a few bugs. It only seems to work on Live 6.0.5 running on Tiger but that isn't too much of a problem.
Its still a pretty tiny niche area but the creative potential for surround is mindblowing. I'm going to see Murcof performing an Octophonic set tonight which is going to be ace.
A program as diverse and fun as Live should natively support surround imho.[/url]
